My son has Asperger's Syndrome, and is a pupil at Wargrave House School, he has been at Wargrave House since he was 5 years old and is now 17 years old.
Wargrave is a special needs school for children with
autism and asperger's syndrome located in Newton-le-Willows
England UK. The original school which was located in
the building illustrated to the left was opened in
September 1971 by the founder and original Principal, Bessie M.
Berman.
Wargrave is an independent school that relies on it's funds from fees paid by Local Authorities and charitable donations; it caters for children aged from 5 to 19 years, and from Easter 1999 will have places available for 62 children. It takes in both day pupils as well as weekly boarders. The main school caters for children from 5 to 16 years old, and there is a further education unit Lakeside House for children aged from 16 to 19 years old.
The school broadly follows the
National Curriculum as it's core, with specialist teachers
attuned to the needs of the autistic and AS child. In addition to
providing simply an education for the children, Wargrave takes them into the community, helping them to gain
work experience and life skills to provide as high a level of
independence as they can attain before adulthood.
Wargrave is a superb school, excellently led by the Principal, Mrs. Pam Maddock, and a fantastic staff of teachers, helpers and support workers. The school provides specialist tuition by additional non-class based teachers, plus four speech and language therapists. The school employs a Family Services Worker, Mr. Steve Bentley, who supports not only families of children at Wargrave, but in the wider North West area.
The children at Wargrave
enjoy many activities including, sports, field trips, and have
even taken trips abroad. All aspects of Wargrave House enable the
children to lead more productive and independent lives. In the
years since it's inception, the actual site on which the school is based has
been extended to include new classrooms, a gymnasium, and fully functional IT
suite run by Adrian Baker which includes access to the internet, and a school
based intranet. For the benefit of outdoor play, an all weather sports
area has been added near to Lakeside House. In line with the expansion of
the school, additional staff have been recruited to provide the specialist
teaching and support required by the children.
Lakeside House, for 16 to 19 year olds, has also added a FE Unit to cater for the increased numbers that are attending the school since it's expansion.
In recent years the school has undergone inspections by OFSTED, and on every occasion has had excellent reports in all areas.
